Bicycle Rodeo

Teach Bike Safety, Skills, and have loads of fun by staging a Bicycle Rodeo.

Googling the words.... Cub Scout Bicycle Rodeo  .... will give you links to lots of ideas. My favorite set comes from the North Trails District, Detroit Area Council, BSA, posted at http://www.cahoonfamily.com/bikerodeo/ntbikerodeo.html

Our Bear Den did the Basic Skills Challenge in a large empty parking lot with about 12 scouts and siblings. Some had training wheels and that was fine. The Basic Skills Challenge is detailed in the file bellow at the bottom of this page.

We divided into pairs of scouts so that none of the challenge stations was crowded and the danger of collisions was minimized.  To lay out the courses you need sidewalk chalk, a chalkline, and some obstacles like orange cones, or just pieces of cardboard set on the pavement. You'll also want a stop watch for the "slow speed" challenge. We concluded our rodeo with a relay race: two teams of scouts took turns pedalling to a boxes at one end of the lot, stopped to withdraw a coin from their respective boxes, pedaled to the other end of the lot to toss the coin in another box, and finally pedaled back to the start line. First team to move all their coins and deposit them successfully wins.
